2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Aluminum in the United States

چکیده
Aluminum is ubiquitous; the third most common element of the earth's crust. It is naturally released to the environment from the weathering of rocks and volcanic activity. Human activities such as mining also result in the release of aluminum to the environment. Aluminum levels in environmental media vary widely depending upon the location and sampling site. In general, background levels of aluminum in the atmosphere are low, typically ranging from about 0.005 to 0.18 μg/m. Much higher levels are routinely observed in urban and industrial locations. Aluminum levels in surface water is usually very low (<0.1 mg/L); however, in acidic waters or water high in humic or fulvic acid content, the concentration of soluble aluminum increases due to the increased solubility of aluminum oxide and aluminum salts. Its concentration in soils varies widely, ranging from about 7 to over 100 g/kg.

Toxaphene is a manufactured pesticide comprising a complex mixture of hundreds of chlorinated terpenes. After DDT was banned from use in the United States in 1972, toxaphene became the most popular substitute. Control of pests on cotton crops was the principal use of toxaphene in the United States, although the pesticide was used to control a variety of insects on a range of crops and to eradic...
متن کامل2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Perfluoroalkyls in the United States
Perfluoroalkyls constitute a class of compounds that have been used extensively in surface coating and protectant formulations due to their unique surfactant properties. Major applications have included protectants for paper and cardboard packaging products, carpets, leather products, and textiles that enhance water, grease, and soil repellency. Perfluoroalkyls have also been used as processing...
متن کامل2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Lead in the United States
Lead is a naturally occurring metal found in the Earth's crust at about 15–20 mg/kg. In comparison to the two most abundant metals in the Earth, aluminum and iron, lead is a relatively uncommon metal. Lead rarely occurs in its elemental state, but rather its +2 oxidation state in various ores throughout the earth. The most important lead containing ores are galena (PbS), anglesite (PbSO4), and ...

Trichloroethylene is a major nonflammable industrial solvent. In 2011, the estimated capacity of the commercial production of trichloroethylene in the United States was 270 million pounds. Historically, the most important use of trichloroethylene has been vapor degreasing of metal parts. This use has declined over the past decade due to increased environmental regulations governing trichloroeth...

DDT is an organochlorine insecticide that has found a broad range of agricultural and nonagricultural applications in the United States and worldwide beginning in 1939. In 1972, DDT use was banned in the United States and in many parts of the world, except for use in controlling emergency public health problems. DDT is still used in certain parts of the world to control vector-borne diseases, s...
